Your ever-growing list of places you want to visit might be putting a strain on your budget, but there are some places where your money will go further. One of these places is Bangladesh.
Bangladesh is still one of the best places for travelers on a budget. Bangladesh is a country where you can travel for very little money. There are lots of cheap places to eat and stay, and buses and ferries are cheap, so you can get around Bangladesh for about $15 to $20 a day.
Do keep in mind that when things are cheap, the quality is often not very good. At these levels, you shouldn't expect warm water or good hygiene standards. I'll talk more about prices and travel costs in Bangladesh below.
How much does it cost to stay in Bangladesh?
Bangladesh is one of the least traveled countries in the world, so there aren't many hotels that cater to tourists. There are no hostels, and most foreign tourists can only stay in one or two places they can trust.
The only place that might be different is the Shreemangal area, where there are some nice hotels that were made with foreign tourists in mind.
Hotels in Bangladesh don't give you the best value for your money, and even mid-range hotels might not always have good WiFi and hot water.
When you're looking for a place to sleep, you should always look at the room before agreeing to anything, and you should also ask people to show you more than one room. If you want to sleep, and you're staying in a cheap place, try to get a room away from the road. Don't forget to ask for a discount, either.
Find out more about how much different kinds of places to stay in Bangladesh cost below. Prices are usually listed per room, not per person.
Budget hotels in cities: 500 – 1000 Tk/£5 – 8.50/$4.50 – 9
Mid-range hotels: 1,000 – 3,000 Tk/£11 – 33/$12 – 36
Luxury hotels (4 stars or more): 6,500+Tk/£70+/75+
In some cases, you can book a place to stay online, especially if it's in the middle or high price range. But if you want a cheap place to stay, the best thing to do is just walk in and ask for a room. Bangladesh's food and drink prices
You can eat and drink (nonalcoholic drinks) in Bangladesh for almost nothing. There are lots of cheap places to eat, and you can get a damn good cup of chai on the street for about 5 taka. A local breakfast will cost you about 50 taka. I don't think it's a bad deal.
The problem with cheap restaurants is that they don't care much about cleanliness, so there's a good chance you'll get sick at some point. Ordering can be hard, too, because many waiters are too shy to come take your order or won't listen to you when you do because they've already decided they won't understand you.
If you want to eat somewhere local, it's best to go with a local friend or walk into a busy place and point at what you want to eat. If you can't figure out how to order, don't be afraid to go into the kitchen and point at things.
Cheap lunch or dinner: 150 to 300 Tk (£1.50 to £3) or $1.75 to $3.50
Eat lunch or dinner somewhere clean: 200 – 500 Tk/£2 – 5/$2.30 – 6
Tea and snacks on the street cost between 5 and 10 Tk (£0.05 and $0.10).
If you go to fancy places, you can expect to pay about what you would in the U.S. for food and drinks.
How much it cost to get around in Bangladesh
It can be very hard to get around in Bangladesh. It can be hard to figure out where and when your desired mode of transportation leaves from. It can be a nightmare to figure out everything, especially if you want to take a launch. Check out the travel guide for Bangladesh to learn more.
Even though getting around Bangladesh is hard and scary, it's pretty cheap. (Cycle) Rickshaws are a cheap way to get around cities, and taking a bus or ferry won't hurt your wallet either. Find out more about how much it costs to get around Bangladesh below.
Shared rickshaw in a city: 10–20 Tk, £0.05–0.10, or $0.05–0.10
Bus between cities: 200 – 500 Tk/£2 – 5/$2.30 – 5.20
A six-hour ferry ride costs between 200 and 400 Tk, or $2.30 and $4.60.
Lower class overnight train: 400–700 Tk/£4–7/$4.50–9
There aren't many places where you can travel so much and eat so well for so little. Travelers can visit many places of interest, such as archaeological sites, historical mosques and monuments, the longest natural beach in the world, picturesque landscapes, hill forests and wildlife, rolling tea gardens, and tribes at a lower cost than in other parts of the world. Each part of the country has its own unique landscape, tastes, and specialties. It is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, pink dolphins that live in freshwater, and red-earth temples that have been there for a long time.
